The BMW i5 isn’t just a good-looking sedan — it’s a sedan that’s good for the planet. This commanding model runs on all-electric power and creates zero tailpipe emissions, so you can feel great about driving it around Greensboro and beyond. Keep reading to learn about the eco-friendly features and capabilities of the BMW i5, available now at BMW of Greensboro.
BMW i5 Efficiency
An impressive all-electric range makes the BMW i5 a star of sustainability. Choosing an EV keeps you from having to rely on gasoline, which will lessen your carbon footprint (and help you avoid ever-fluctuating gas prices). The i5 has a maximum range of 270 to 295 miles,* and with the My BMW App, you’ll have access to the six largest public charging networks in the country when it’s time to recharge. It only takes 10 minutes at a DC fast charger to add 90 to 100 miles of range to your i5.^ You can also charge up over a longer period at a Level 2 public charger or at home, whether with a Flexible Fast Charger or the BMW Wallbox.
One of the most fascinating ways that the i5’s electric motors achieve incredible efficiency is through regenerative braking. The i5 uses a Brake Energy Recuperation system to recapture energy generated by braking and redirect it to the model’s batteries, where it can be used to power the vehicle. In this way, the energy is put to good use rather than being wasted.

BMW i5 Interior
Instead of creating the BMW i5’s interior from entirely new materials, BMW made the sustainable choice to incorporate recycled materials in various ways. For example, the floor panels in this model, as well as those in the BMW iX and X1, are made from recycled fishing nets, floor coverings, and the scraps resulting from plastic production. BMW turns trash into treasure by including these waste materials in their vehicles. Using recycled components to create these panels also results in 25 percent fewer CO2 emissions (when compared to the emissions that would be created by producing the panels conventionally).
That’s not all: The luggage compartment paneling is also composed of a minimum of 50 percent recycled plastic, and there are other parts of the BMW i5 that contain up to 100 percent recycled plastic. BMW is also collaborating with a third-party start-up that creates DesertTex™, a material made up of pulverized cactus fibers and a bio-based polyurethane matrix. DesertTex™ may be used in future iterations of the i5, but for now, if you want to avoid animal products within your model, the leather alternate Veganza is available as a seating surface. This material offers just as much luxury as animal products do without a reliance on the cattle industry (which has had an extreme impact on the rise of global CO2 emissions rates).
BMW also put thought into the end of the i5’s lifecycle and is working to develop ways to recycle the EV’s high-voltage batteries. The brand continues to work to find ways to make the lifecycles of its vehicles more and more sustainable.
Benefits of Driving the BMW i5
Along with the many planet-friendly features and specifications we listed above, there are also special perks that come with driving the BMW i5. EVs have been shown to have lower maintenance costs over time, as they don’t need oil changes, transmission flushes, and regular engine maintenance. Additionally, in some metropolitan areas, EV owners can drive in the HOV lane — even without a passenger.
